Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
Students are expected to follow directions and be accountable with their work so success can be attainable.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I want to know about you by assessment of whatever area you present to me. In other words, let me know you through showing me examples of your present knowledge. Then, together we can explore your difficulty and find new ways to overcome any problems.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Quizzes and tests are the best way to monitor success.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I have different methods to allow the student to feel a part of the lesson; that would include creative assignments.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I believe practice makes perfect. Use organizational skills and apply what you learned daily to develop good study habits. Take notes, ask questions, and review the material to build good organizational skills. These will help in mastering concepts.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Vocabulary building, along with answering questions, can help you understand what you are reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I try to build confidence that anything is possible.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I use activities that promote learning. Video segments are educational methods I would use for helping a student engage in the lesson.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I use tests, quizzes, and homework to assess learning.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I always look for positive reinforcement in any work during the session.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Each subject has assessment methods. Again, I will use testing to determine successful outcomes.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
When I meet a student it's helpful to schedule additional sessions to understand the needs of the student. One meeting is not enough to adapt to a student's needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Use of the whiteboard is a smart interface that helps teacher and student connect so that materials for class may be downloaded for student use.
