I studied at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Economics. Shortly after college, I joined the Marine Corps as a commissioned officer, serving for several years until recently leaving active duty. I currently tutor English reading and writing, but I have previously tutored local middle school students during much of college in all subjects from math to language to sciences. I routinely coached my Marines on how to solve complex problems throughout my time in the Corps and I have edited successful application essays for Ivy League MBA programs. In my current tutoring, just as in these past experiences, I help students reach and exceed their goals by first developing my own understanding of their current skill and knowledge base, working with them to develop an action plan, and guiding them along that journey.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in my commitment to leadership, which has consistently been a cornerstone in my adult life from college through my military career to today. Two foundational elements to my leadership style are education and mentorship. I am passionately driven to lead others to accomplish increasingly daunting challenges, and empower them to become better versions of themselves in the process.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is rooted in my commitment to leadership, which has consistently been a cornerstone in my adult life from college through my military career to today. This is because two foundational elements to my leadership style are education and mentorship. I am passionately driven to lead others to accomplish increasingly daunting challenges, and empower them to become better versions of themselves in the process.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I commonly get to know my student to understand his or her current skill and knowledge base in the relevant subject, discuss desired goals, and then develop an initial action plan for the student to follow. Throughout every session, from the first to the last, I will coach my student to develop and sustain a positive mindset when approaching challenges--one that is acutely aware of problems, but constantly focuses on appropriately effective solutions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

While tutoring, I work with my students to help them develop a better understanding of the subject matter, instead of just giving them the answers. By coaching them on the "how" and "why" when solving problems, I empower students to become lifelong learners, even in everyday situations.
