I received my degree in pharmacy at the University of South Carolina and am currently attending the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to obtain my health-coaching license. In my free time, I enjoy going to live music concerts, reading, and running. I have tutored various students from elementary school through college for the past three years and have loved every moment of it. My favorite subjects to tutor include science, math, and psychology. I believe each student is unique in his or her learning style, and I aim to discover each student’s style so they have the best opportunity to learn the material and understand it. I truly want each student to leave my sessions feeling more confident with themselves and the material they need to learn. Self-confidence is a huge factor in learning. With patience and tailoring to each student’s learning style, my goal is for each student to understand the material, not simply memorize it for a test or quiz.

Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
Each student has a unique learning style; therefore I base my teaching off of how each student best learns the material. I believe patience and encouragement are important aspects of teaching, and truly want each student to understand the material, not simply memorize the information.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
During the first session with a student, I will determine how they best learn information, and focus on making them feel comfortable and confident that they truly can learn the information.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will give the student study tools and tips for learning information. I believe organization and planning are also important aspects of learning independently, so I will provide them with organizational tactics that have helped me.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Encouragement and patience are key aspects of helping a student stay motivated. If a student is constantly frustrated, their motivation dwindles quickly. I have found that reassurance and positive comments are always best to give a student.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will continue to apply different strategies of learning the skill or concept until they have mastered the subject.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that making the student feel comfortable and reassuring them that they will succeed has been the best strategy. This allows the student to feel more motivated to learn the material.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I enjoy providing real-world stories and examples that show them how they can apply the information they are learning. When we are able to make connections to actual scenarios, we are more likely to want to learn the information.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Techniques I use include making flashcards, reviewing notes, quizzing the student on the information, completing practice problems and worksheets, and answering questions that apply the material to real-life situations.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Constant reassurance and encouragement is key to building a student's confidence, as well as having patience when they are struggling in a certain subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs based on their performance in the classroom, grades, information from the parents, and asking the students what they most struggle with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to each student's unique learning style. For example, a student who is a visual learner will learn much different that a student who is an auditory learner.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use worksheets, flashcards, the student's textbooks and own materials, the Internet, books, and planners.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I ask the students questions from material that I have them read. I show them tactics that help them better comprehend what they have read, and build up the difficulty of the questions.
