I recently graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara with a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Media studies. My primary focus was in Post-Production editing and VFX specialization. I started tutoring part-time when I first entered high school and have been broadening my student base and improving my methods ever since. I began by helping elementary students who were struggling with the basics of Math, English, Science, and History and as I became more educated, so did my students. During high school I helped peer students with AP English Literature and Language essays as well as college admission essays and continued to tutor younger students in core subjects. When I entered college I began helping students prepare for various Standardized Tests, focusing primarily on reading and writing skills. Since graduation, I've continued to broaden my overall teaching capabilities and my knowledge of SAT and ACT preparation.

My approach to tutoring relies on three simple principles: Patience, Empathy, and Commitment. I strive to be as patient with my students as possible, while attempting to put myself in their shoes and understand why they might be struggling. I then stay fully committed to each specific problem the student might have, making sure to never simply gloss over a subject or skip something that they are continually having a tough time with. In my free time, I try to surf, make music, and create films as much as possible. I've given surf lessons, guitar lessons, and digital music production lessons to students of all ages, which has helped strengthen the range of material I'm able to teach. My passion for these endeavors has also enabled me to use more creative and engaging approaches when teaching particularly uninteresting subjects.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Be patient, empathetic, and fully committed.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Spend 5-10 minutes introducing ourselves in order to increase the comfort level. Then we could focus on the most recent problems the student has been struggling with, starting with the least challenging and working our way toward the most difficult. Generally, I like to get as much done as possible in the first session without overworking the student, so that he or she feels accomplished but not worn out.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Allowing them to understand the joy and pride of coming to conclusions and finding answers on their own. Teaching them how to learn, rather than what to learn.
