I believe that each child is a unique individual who has the potential to
contribute much to the world. I also believe that these individuals are
our future. In order to secure a bright and promising future, we need to provide the children with a caring, equitable and stimulating environment that will assist them in discovering who they are. It is my promises to "ME," as an educator, to help the students reach their fullest potential by (1) Acting as a guide (2) Allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning (3) Encourage continual learning and growth (4) Helping to promote a vision of a world where people learn to respect, accept, and embrace the differences between humans, as the fundamental of what makes life so exciting.
When the teacher serves as a guide as opposed to the primary source of data and information, the students' search for knowledge allows them to find answers to their questions in real-world situations. By providing them with access to information, they have a greater opportunity for input, construction of knowledge and self-discovery. As a guide, my focus should be to provide my students with hands-on activities with real-life applications and provides reinforcements through the use of study materials.
As equally important with providing guidance is developing a curriculum that allows the child's curiosity to serves as a catalyst to stimulate his/her passion for learning. Affording the student the opportunity and adequate time to study things that are interesting to them, motivates them to generate ideas and make for much richer activities that the educator can imagine. When students have ownership in developing the curriculum, studies have shown that they work hard to master the skills needed to reach their objectives.
Education is a lifelong process. For me, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my objectives is to instill that passion and love of learning in all my students. Education, both formal and informal is not simply about acquiring skill sets to be employable but should evoke a passion for learning for "learning's sake." I feel that in no time period in our history that it is more crucial than today, which we need dedicated educators who are excited about working with children.
Every classroom presents a unique community of learners that varies not only in learning styles and abilities, but also in their views of society and the world.
My goal is to give each student the tools they need to cultivate their individual gardens of knowledge. I will teach to the needs of the child so that each student can feel capable and successful. Finally, I will teach them that respect begets respect, and respect for self, others, and their environment is keys to success. In our competitive society it is important not to only have a solid education, but to be aware of the importance and beauty of bio-diversity.
