I firmly believe that one on one tutoring can help students reach their full potential both in school and on standardized tests required for graduation and college. I take an approach to tutoring that is fun, while emphasizing content and using memory tricks to help students memorize important material. I have a bachelor's degree in Music Industry from SUNY Oneonta and a Master's in Teaching from Union Graduate College. I currently teach ninth and tenth grade Global History and also AIS remediation for students who have previously failed the Global History Regents. I love history and hope to share my enthusiasm with students! I have extensive experience tutoring for the SAT and for the New York State Regents exams. My students typically see significant point gains. Outside of teaching, I enjoy music, movies, reading, writing, cooking dinner with my husband, and playing with my cat. I hope to be able to help students achieve their goals on tests and in school.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Teachers should be able to explain information in an interesting and understandable way to student.

Typically, during a first session, students will take a practice test that will allow me to analyze their strengths and weaknesses and focus on improving the weaknesses.

Students can become independent learners by learning new and easy ways to read and remember material.

I can help students stay motivated by making sure to give continuous positive feedback.

If a student has difficulty learning a concept, I will continue to teach or explain it in different ways until the student finds it understandable.

Students struggling with reading comprehension can be helped by using close reading, context clues, and main idea strategies.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that identifying a student's weaknesses and focusing on those areas is most successful.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I like to integrate things into topics that might matter to a student's life. If a student has hobbies, trying to tie those into a subject is important!

I use frequent pre and post tests to ensure that a student understands the material.

I build a student's confidence in a subject by using frequent markers of progress to allow that student to know where he or she stands.

I adapt tutoring to a student's needs by discussing things which do or do not work for him or her, and focusing on the things that work.
