What is your teaching philosophy?
Teachers that made an impact on my learning experiences have made the topic relevant to me. If I can apply the topic at hand in some way, I am successful at remembering the topic. I strive to making learning relevant to my students.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I will get to know the student, and they in turn will get to know me. My goal to find out what the student needs assistance in, find their learning level and needs, and develop a plan of learning.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
For a student to become an independent learner, the student must first know what to look for when researching answers. By showing a student key words, and how to organize thoughts, the student will have more confidence in taking on learning on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Motivation is unique to every student. By understanding my students, motivation comes easy. What works best? Praise, high fives, breaks? It is all up to the student's needs.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
In order to help a student learn, we have to find out what is causing the difficulty. I would backtrack to see where the difficulty began and work from there forward.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading can be overwhelming if the student is not confident in their reading ability; therefore, I would break the reading into "chunks" and work with the student in not only reading the passage but also in understanding what the author is conveying, by using open-ended questions.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I 'd get to know the student- their likes, favorite and least liked subjects, as well as personal info, and I would share mine. This builds a relationship and trust.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Each student is different. So, basic techniques would be open-ended questions, individual practice, and possible acting out the story (if reading).
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
In order to get a student excited -- I would like to first know what they don't like about the subject. In finding out why, I can begin to tackle the how and build confidence. I will try to find fun ways to have the student learn without them even knowing they are learning!
