I earned a BS degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois. I tutor basic math, Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II. My tutoring experience includes high school students in Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II and middle school students in basic math.
While all of these subjects are a pleasure to teach, I get the most rewarding experience with Geometry. It seems to be the one area of mathematics that is most difficult for students to get comfortable.
Helping students be as successful as possible is a function of patience, using multiple explanations to help a young person grasp a particular concept and stressing the basics. During a session it is important to ask questions to ensure understanding and to offer encouragement and praise to build confidence and an enthusiasm for the school work.
When not tutoring, I enjoy bridge, walking(I walk 1.5 miles every morning.), yard work and gardening. I am also an avid reader primarily of history.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Take time to review the basics. Repeat them often, and take the time to explain them in different ways until the student is confident in his or her understanding of the material.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I want to learn what the student feels are the difficulties he or she is having. Then we should develop a plan to address these issues.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Building confidence through achievement is the best way to help a student become independent.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Constant positive feedback and consistent encouragement will work with almost all students.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Repetition, trying different ways of explaining the material and patience will help the student learn the material.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading is fundamental to all learning. If a student is a poor reader, I would help him or her with understanding the lesson we are working on together, but would strongly suggest to the parents that they work with the child throughout the week to improve reading skills.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Rely on the basics. Have the student repeat and/or write the approach to problem solving with each new problem, until it seems comfortable and well-understood.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Success is the best motivator. With each correct solution to a problem, offer positive feedback and encouragement.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
We should work on problems together until it is clear that the student can perform without error in the approach to problem solving.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
My answer is the same as in a previous question: Confidence comes with success. With each successful exercise, praise the student and encourage him or her to continue.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
First, ask the student what problems to understanding the material exist. Then do some sample problems to confirm, or add to the problems the student identified.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Some students just didn't understand an assignment. With additional explanation they are off and running. Others are slower to grasp the material. Here you must work with the student until it is clear that the material is understood.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Scratch paper and sharp number 2 pencils for doing math problems, graph paper, a ruler, a protractor and a compass are all handy to have.
