I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Physics as well as Post Baccalaureate work Physics and Optical Sciences. I have tutored at the walk-in tutor center at SDSU and have given Mini Lectures in Entry Level Mathematics also at SDSU. I am currently tutoring disabled Veterans in College Level Physics and College Level Algebra.

I currently work with two tutoring companies and Varsity Tutors - I have 200 hours of tutoring with the first two organizations

I tutor all Levels of Mathematics up to 1st semester Calculus. I can tutor Physical Sciences and Physics up to 1st Semester College Level Physics. I can find the level of the student and can begin from there. I instruct the student so that they are making the judgments and I guide them. I tell students it does no good for me to do the problems because I will not be there for the test. I have virtually infinite patience. "Dave is very personable, He is a good instructor, knows the material, Highly Recommended"

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I can find the level of the student and begin from there. I instruct the student so that they are making the judgments, and I guide them. I tell students it does no good for me to do the problems because I will not be there for the test. I have virtually infinite patience.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find the level of the student and start from there - also a small amount of personal banter is helpful in building a more personal relationship with the student - to allow the student to feel at ease.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By providing questions - if the student is weak in an area - back all the way up to the most basic of steps and step through the problem - repeating as many similar steps as needed to build confidence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Providing encouragement - if problems are broken down into small steps, it will help them take those steps.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Back up to the most fundamental of steps and guide and repeat - if not try another approach - until the light bulb goes off.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

N/A

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Find their level and work from there.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

To find other resources that might present the material in another way that is more understandable - if it is a lecture class, read ahead so that when material is presented in class they can follow it instead of struggle with it because it is the first time they have seen it.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

One can give additional problems if none are provided.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Breaking it into understandable steps and the appropriate praise and encouragement.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By working with them one can see their strengths and weaknesses - and sometimes casual conversation can show difficulties outside the subject that are ultimately affecting the student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Experience leaves you with a variety of tools with which to attack a problem - so you use those tools to adapt to the student's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Just pen, paper and a calculator.
