I was born and raised in Mexico and attended my first nine years of school there. My dream, however, was to attend an American university and pursuing that dream has been one of the greatest challenges I have faced in my life. I have always worked hard to be an academic high-achiever. During ninth grade, I was recognized for having one of the highest GPAs statewide. In the beginning of my junior year, I enrolled in as many Advanced Placement and Honors courses as I could and I joined the Academy of Finance, where I found my vocation: Economics. During my junior year, however, I was informed that about 70% of my school credits from Mexico were invalid. This meant that, if I wanted to meet the A-G requirements in order to graduate along with my class and to qualify to attend an American college, I would have to take off-schedule and summer courseswhich I did. By the end of my junior year, even with having a part-time job, I ranked first in my class.
As my senior summer arrived and I was still taking courses to earn the make-up credits, I was notified that I had been accepted for part of the summer into the Cambridge Scholars Programme for high-achieving students and awarded a full scholarship. This meant that I only had two weeks to finish the three-month online course before I had to leave for Cambridge University. I successfully finished the course and it was an exciting experience.
After a year in the United States and after coming back from Cambridge University, I became more active in my school and in my community during my senior year. I served on the Academy of Finance Advisory Board and I donated eighteen inches of my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths (a program that makes wigs for women who are undergoing cancer treatment). I even established my own investment club that year.
Now that I have reached my second year of college at the University of California, Berkeley, I am very excited to be the first person in my family to attend an American university. I finally see that all of the previous hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifices are starting to pay-off in bringing me closer to my dream.
