I am currently a student at UC Berkeley pursuing a BA in Sociology. My introduction to tutoring came six years ago, when I began trying to help my younger sister overcome her learning disability and understand complex math concepts. Since then, I have been involved in numerous educational ventures. I founded an interactive, experiment-based science club program at a local shelter for homeless families; coached my peers in speech writing and public speaking as Co-President of my high school’s Speech & Debate team; and helped middle school students to refine their writing through the service organization WriterCoach Connection. In addition, I was one of only five students in the world to earn a perfect score on the 2012 AP Biology Exam, out of over 200,000 test-takers!

At the most fundamental level, my draw to tutoring stems from a deep-rooted desire to learn. I believe that acquiring knowledge is the key to living well, as it opens one’s mind to the vast array of perspectives that can be used to enrich and interpret existence. In every intellectual discipline lies an endless stream of challenges and diversions, as well as strategies for overcoming personal strife. Math problems are a template for quick, creative thinking; history readings shed light on why we think the ways we do; essays are opportunities to make one’s own voice heard. It is my goal as a tutor to introduce others to this invigorating power of academics. I want students to not only improve their skill sets but also gain an appreciation for the material. Ideally all will develop a level of understanding that allows them to start asking critical questions of their own.

When I am not teaching or hitting the books, I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee, taking hikes, and trying to keep up with my three younger siblings.
