My experience as a Peace Corps volunteer and teacher taught me the importance of helping individuals to empower themselves. Through increasing a student's confidence and comfort with a subject, one can begin to build the capacity for further enrichment and success. My most rewarding moments as a teacher were when my students seemingly broke through a wall of frustration and self-doubt to understand that hard work, commitment, and determination culminate in an empowering and motivating sense of achievement. When teaching, my curiosity and interest in a variety of subjects is apparent, as is my patient optimism, flexibility, and unwavering but gentle determination to help the student learn and succeed. I have experience working with students from a variety of backgrounds and competence levels, and measure my own success as a tutor by the success of my students. In addition to tutoring, I work in a research laboratory at a local university where I am able to explore my own interests and learn every day. My teaching philosophy is influenced by my scientific experience - work hard, ask questions, be curious, and always double check your work!
