What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, the most important thing is to establish a set of goals for tutoring and then come up with a game plan of how to get there.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
In my experience, losing motivation usually comes from not understanding a topic, which makes perfect sense. Why would someone want to do something that is really difficult to make any progress on? Through tutoring, we can work together to make whatever challenge you're facing seem not so challenging, and even fun.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
The first thing to do would be figure out why a student is struggling. Have they been missing school? Is this topic simply not something that is clicking with them? Once that is established, the next step would be to find out what the student does know on the topic and build up their knowledge up from there.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By first getting to know a student, I can come up with ways to relate a previously boring topic to something they are already excited about, making the entire topic more engaging and easier to learn. Sometimes all it takes is a different perspective.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I don't believe that anyone is inherently any smarter than anyone else; some people just happen to be better taught to their learning styles
