I am a graduate student from the University of San Francisco majoring in Asian and Pacific Studies. I was born and bred in China so I speak Mandarin as my first language. I have been learning English since I was a little kid so I am fluent in English too. I also speak Japanese as my second foreign language and am certified at the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. I also speak Korean and French at a conversational level.
I have rich experience as a Mandarin tutor. When I was in China, I tutored English-speaking Mandarin students on the HSK Level 4 test and helped them pass the test in one semester. I also helped Japanese speaking Mandarin students to improve their conversation skills. I have been tutoring my colleagues at USF in Mandarin since August 2014; our courses range from Mandarin 101 to 201. Based on my knowledge in Mandarin and Chinese culture, I am able to tutor Mandarin on a variety of levels from beginning to advanced. I worked with one of my colleague-students in a Chinese literature directed study by aiding her study of a classic Chinese novel, Dream of the Red Chamber.
Given my multi-cultural and multi-linguistic background and my tutoring experience, I am very willing to accommodate my clients by getting to know their learning background in Mandarin, talking to them to work out personalized learning plans, and plotting the best learning strategies for clients with different learning goals. My previous clients appreciate my knowledge of the regional differences in Chinese dialects, and they also think its very helpful that I can help them navigate the various ways of understanding Mandarin.
