I completed my undergraduate studies at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Religion. While at Spelman, I volunteered as a mentor/tutor for a local community organization that served underprivileged students. After Spelman, I went on to complete my graduate work in Education and School Psychology at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio, from which I obtained a Master of Science in Education degree, as well as an Educational Specialist degree in School Psychology. I am licensed as a school psychologist in Georgia and Virginia and I am also a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. As a school psychologist, I have a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in the areas of assessment and intervention. These skills will be beneficial to me as a tutor in that they will aid me in the process of specifically targeting areas of need (assessment) and providing instruction to fill the gap of the need (intervention). In addition to being a school psychologist, I have worked in various areas and positions within the education field, and with various age groups. I have held positions as a substitute teacher, preschool teacher, reading interventionist, adjunct faculty member (university level), and Director of Curriculum and Training at an accredited preschool. I have also worked as a Resident Advisor for summer programs and I have fulfilled various duties in school-based after school programs. From these various positions, I have had many experiences that have provided me the opportunity to build my knowledge and skills as an educator.
I am available to tutor in the areas of Math, English, Reading, Writing, Social Sciences/Psychology, Special Education, Public Speaking, Study Skills/Organization, and Other/Testing. My philosophy of education is that I believe that each individual can learn, and it is up to me, as an educator, to provide the opportunities for that individual to be taught according to his or her own ability level and learning style. As I provide academic instruction, I also strive to enhance an individual's intellectual, social/emotional, and behavioral development, as a means to build a well-rounded individual.
More than just my knowledge and skills, what makes me a great tutor is that I am a motivated and energetic person who loves to learn and who loves to see others learn. In my spare time I enjoy playing and watching sports and outdoor activities, especially biking and fishing. I love all types of music (I have been singing since I was about 5 years old and have been playing instruments since the age of 8). I also enjoy watching movies, cooking with my husband, traveling, and experiencing new things. I have a passion and a strong desire to help individuals succeed, and as a tutor with Varsity Tutors, it is my goal to help you not just meet your goals but to exceed your goals. I cannot wait to meet you!
