I am an English Literature graduate from California State University, Long Beach. I have experience working with students from elementary ages up through high school. I am comfortable and confident in my ability to work with people of all ages. I am often asked to help students work on their reading comprehension and writing skills (i.e. grammar, punctuation, essay structure, critical thinking, etc). English is definitely my favorite subject to teach. I'm an avid reader of everything from classic literature, to current series like the Hunger Games trilogy, to non-fiction, so teaching others to better interact with texts, form their own opinions about them, and write about them is fun for me. I also do math tutoring for elementary and middle school math.
I'm a firm believer that every student is unique, and I strive to understand the individual needs of whoever I work with to best make use of our time together. My style is to ask the student as many questions as I can. This helps involve the student in lessons, rather than having me simply talk at them for long periods of time. I think it's also important to have a good rapport with those I work with. Needing a tutor can be hard to accept for some, so I make it a point to be patient and encouraging. I see tutoring as a collaborative effort, and a student who feels comfortable learns easier.
In my free time I enjoy reading, writing, playing music, riding my bike, and watching movies.
