My first undergraduate major was History at the University of Virginia, but I returned to school later on and completed an undergraduate math major as well. I enjoy learning and teaching both math and all things verbal! I completed my M.Ed. and most of my math courses online, so I know first-hand how online study opens up learning options.
I homeschooled my own four children through mid-high school. All had excellent standardized testing outcomes throughout. As an extension of my homeschooling experience I then tutored for five years in all subjects from beginning reading through ACT prep and enjoyed this very much. I decided as a result of my that experience to pursue full-time teaching. Though my original degree is in history, I had always wanted to go back and pick up my "mathy" side and continue beyond the differential calculus I had in high school and first year in college, so I decided to pursue a teaching credential.
I enjoy helping people who think they can't do something discover that they can. I love finding the intersections between a student's skills and confidence levels, my "backwards and forwards" grasp of content, and the teaching tools I have at my disposal. I love using my teaching repertoire (content and skills) to help students build bridges and move forward toward their goals. I am a great tutor because I love learning myself, because I have a wide range of experience in teaching and in life, because I listen well, am thorough, and prepare carefully, and because I have depth of teaching and content skill that enables me to "turn on a dime," so to speak--to adapt my teaching quickly to whatever need a student evidences in the moment. I am amazingly good at figuring out quickly where a student's gaps and misconceptions are and finding the place to which we need to "back up," address gaps and misconceptions, and then work our way forward again. Finally, I am a great tutor because I am friendly and funny and enjoy getting to know my students.I enjoy finding the intersections between a student's needs and interests, the content or skills involved, and my teaching skills. All of us are always learning!
