I graduated from M.I.T. in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and minors in Biology and Music. I love the arts just as much as I love science, and while I was in college I spent a summer at Oxford University studying Art History and Romantic Poetry. Later I got my M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. After finishing residency and several years of practice, I decided to make a change and follow my lifelong dream of becoming a writer. I obtained my M.F.A. in creative writing from NYU, where I taught creative writing to undergraduates. So far I've had one essay and two short stories published. Currently, I'm working on a book of short stories. I tutor a variety of subjects, including life sciences, biology, physiology, and anatomy, but also English and writing. Through my M.F.A. program I've learned a lot about the craft of writing, and as a volunteer tutor at 826 Boston, a nonprofit children's writing center, I've learned a lot about how to help children learn to write, and about how fun writing can be for kids if it's taught in the right way. My philosophy as a tutor is to teach children how to problem-solve, and how to make connections and reach conclusions on their own, without being spoon-fed the answers. This was the approach to learning that I received at M.I.T. and it has served me well throughout life. In my spare time, I read voraciously, knit nerdy patterns (DNA double helix cables, stripes according to the Fibonacci sequence), swim badly, and delight in my little nieces and nephew. Also, if asked nicely, I will recite the entire poem "Jabberwocky" from memory.
