I am a civil engineering major at San Diego State University. My love for mathematics brought me to my engineering major. As an advocate for Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), I would like to encourage students to work hard in school and be anything they choose to be based on choice, not just because math is difficult. I enjoy tutoring math for high school and middle school students. I hope to see many more STEM majors in the near future.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy includes learning fundamentals by carefully following formula and mathematical tools, such as proofs and methods through books. I do not recommend students only follow one approach or strictly follow what their teacher says or gives notes on. Various methods of learning are essential to being a true mathematician.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I look at the teacher's syllabus/learning plan to identify where the student is in the course. I encourage students to show me what they struggle with, provide old tests or homework they misunderstood, take notes from the book and create flashcards for ongoing learning tools.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I encourage the student to practice their mathematical skills outside of class and tutoring sessions. It is important to be comfortable and confident in your ability to learn, and not always depend on others for that confidence or "right answer."

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I remind them they are doing well. I identify if a problem is intermediate or advanced so they can know maybe they are there yet in the learning. Math is natural, but it can also be a learned skill. I encourage students to be aware of their time in the course, and how effective learning and skill is accomplished over time.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I usually encourage flashcards to practice aside from the sessions. I also may look at other methods of solving, or explain the concept with a different learning tool (book, notes, etc.).

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find recovering the material is the most successful way to teach a student. Following examples from a teacher is not the best way to learn, but understanding the material thoroughly and finding out how to proof your work gives math skills longevity.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I simply tell students that all math is applied in the real world and has changed everything that advanced our generations. I give specific examples of how algorithms established by simple and complex math made all current technology.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I make sure they follow what they learn by allowing them to complete problems on their own, and if they make a mistake, asking them to point out that mistake themselves instead of me telling them.
