After receiving a master’s degree in speech communications from the University of Tennessee, I moved to California, where I spent several years in the cable television industry. I ran several local channels, producing, directing and writing programs. As the director of a college multimedia center, I taught television production, film history, English, speech, argumentation and debate. I had the good fortune to work with many school-aged children who produced and wrote their own television programs. In 1999, I returned to Colorado, where I continued teaching English and speech at Front Range Community College. Since 2000, I have also worked as a communications consultant, helping speakers and writers produce commercials and promotional materials, tweak website content, and write/revise resumes and business communications. I am currently the education manager for an online stock market trading school. Our students range in age from 16 to 86, so they come to us with varying degrees of technical knowledge and skill. I have had the opportunity to tutor many students in various disciplines. While I can help younger children in almost any subject, I have been most successful helping middle- and high school students with reading and writing development, study skills and time-management. I have worked with them to improve their reading comprehension skills, essay-writing (for class and college entrance/tests), and writing across-the-curriculum. Expressing themselves clearly is a particular challenge for many students who excel in math and science but who have experienced frustration with writing assignments. Current trends in education reform have inspired me to expand my tutoring activity. While the reforms have presented new challenges for students and their families, I have been able to help them adapt by drawing on my deep understanding of the standards, testing and curricular elements involved. In my free time I enjoy swimming, skiing, hiking with my dog, cooking, gardening, yoga, and watching Rockies baseball.
