There is always more than one way to approach a problem. The best problem solvers will have the biggest toolkits of problem strategies. I believe in balancing both ways of looking at the world: the artistic/holistic and the logical/analytical. My grandfather taught me to tell time by giving me a clock to take apart and put back together again. My formal education is a Bachelor's degree in Engineering and Applied Science from California Institute of Technology and a Master's degree in Computer Science (with distinction) from California State University at Chico. I garden, paint and play folk music: bluegrass and Chinese classical music on banjo, ruan and erhu. I worked most of my career as a research scientist at Hewlett-Packard labs and have 30 US patents. I believe the world needs creative people. I always try to help my students find creative solutions, and I try to give them as many problem solving skills as I can.
