I've loved history, literature, and writing my whole life. As a result I decided to become a history teacher while I was still in high school. I earned both my BA in history and my MA in teaching from Earlham College. In 2007, I began working at Sylvan Learning Center near my hometown (Bellevue, WA), eventually gaining seven years tutoring experience in a wide range of subject matters. I also teach online, instructing students in history and writing, and I am in my seventh year of classes.
As a result of these years of experience, I always focus on two areas: connecting well with the students via good listening and a good sense of humor, and connecting the students to the subject through flexibility, adaptability, and asking challenging, thought-provoking questions. I'm not interested in teaching students how to repeat information back to me; I want my students to truly understand crucial concepts and their importance to the broader subject and to daily life. A few other of my rules for teaching: one, be 100% patient; two, if something didn't work, try something else; three, always have something to write with.
When I'm not teaching, I generally spend most of my time reading and writing. I also enjoy running -- in high school I was a long-distance runner, and in college I ran for fun while also playing Ultimate Frisbee. While I read the news regularly, I also enjoy more entertaining material such as comics, SF/fantasy novels, and movies. In short, I am cheerfully geeky.
