I am a recent high school graduate from the class of 2014 and am now majoring in Anthropology at California State University - Northridge.
I have been tutoring others since my eighth grade year. People feel comfortable with my teaching style and my patience. I am comfortable tutoring people because I have three brothers who I tutor as well.
I can tutor elementary math to Algebra 1, as well as all levels of Spanish. Spanish was my first language and I was raised in a household where Spanish is used the entire day, so I'm very fluent in it. I took both AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature and Culture, so I feel very comfortable with those tests.
English is my strongest and favorite subject. I have taken both AP English Language and Literature. I also feel comfortable editing essays and stories as well as elementary phonics and grammar.
My tutoring style is based on what the student comprehends and I mold concepts according to that knowledge. If one example doesn't work, I can take a different approach to things. Patience is one of my greatest virtues and I feel that people are comfortable with me because of my experience being on the other side of the tutoring spectrum. I know what it is like to struggle with math and English problems. It is the struggle that drives a person to attempt to overcome it. Tutoring is something I look forward to doing because I know that at the end of the day, students will learn something from me and apply it to their work, and I will gain teaching experience.
In my free time I enjoy sports. During high school I ran Cross Country and I still find it very relaxing and stress relieving. If I'm not tutoring or running, I am reading a book. Books have helped me so much, whether it is learning new vocabulary, experiencing a war, love, or tragic story.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Find out what their fortes are and what strategies they would like to use to better themselves in a subject they are uncomfortable with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can imbue them with confidence with positive comments and let them know that it takes self motivation and a drive for success before asking for help.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Giving positive comments to them and reassuring them that things will get easier the more they do them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Pause for a moment and explain the skill or concept to them in a way they will understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I tell them to read slower and really grasp the concept of each word and piece it all together in the end.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I start to work with a student, I have found it helpful to have them look at me as a friendly tutor who knows their true potential and has confidence that they will learn the subject.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help them get excited by relating fun concepts to the subject they are struggling in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would give them a verbal and/ or written quiz with a few new examples to see if they have grasped the material.
