I am a graduate of North Carolina State University, the University of California at Davis and Samuel Merritt University. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications/Public Relations, a Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication and a Master of Science in Nursing. I am a nurse practitioner and promote whole-person wellness through holistic coaching and integrative and complementary/alternative therapies. I have taught public speaking and group communication at the college level and have tutored people of all ages informally in a variety of subject areas, mostly science and English. I am passionate about making science relevant to daily life and about helping people put words together in ways that help them clearly and accurately communicate their ideas. In my experience, classroom lessons are often more complex or confusing than they need to be, because they are presented in ways that are completely unrelated to a student’s experience. Once a student can connect the dots between the lesson at hand and something he or she already knows, the learning process can actually become fun. I have had great results helping people succeed in science courses (especially the courses with lab write-ups or projects), ace their writing assignments, and master the performance anxiety that can arise from projects that involve public speaking. I believe that knowledge is power, and I enjoy empowering others by helping them learn. In my spare time, I enjoy any outdoor activity, especially long back-country packing trips with horses and mules.
