During my collegiate career I took on multiple opportunities to volunteer abroad. Throughout my study abroad in Costa Rica I volunteered at a local orphanage where I tutored middle school students in math and science. Upon completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder I worked as an Americorps educator, where I met with students at an after-school program and offered tutoring, help with homework, and test taking advice. I enjoyed the long-term challenge of shaping study habits and I strongly believe that an engaging approach to learning is critical to the academic process. A number of my students primarily spoke Spanish and were lacking fundamental understanding in science, math and english. With my Spanish skills I was able to bridge some of the gaps in their education and help to improve their fragmented foundation of academic knowledge. I thoroughly enjoy the challenges of tutoring, and believe that as a tutor my job is more than just answering questions and explaining ideas, but also helping to shape an academic attitude in my students that is conducive to long-term success in the classroom.
