I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education with a minor in science. Upon graduating, I launched my career as an elementary school teacher in a small, remote village on Kodiak Island, Alaska, where I taught grades 4-12 in a single room. It was exceptional learning that spoke to my firm belief that indeed, 'everyone and everything around you is your teacher.' Upon returning to the lower 48, I moved to the Colorado Rockies, where I continued to teach and coach. As an avid outdoors enthusiast, it was no surprise that I left the traditional classroom when I had the opportunity to engage former students in outdoor leadership and recreation with Full Circle of Lake County. For three years, I coordinated such activities and excursions as spelunking, white water rafting, and snowboarding to climbing Colorado's highest 14,000 foot peak. In addition to spending so much time in our big, beautiful backyard, we worked to promote positive attitudes and healthy behaviors, and sought to involve family and fellow community members in our endeavors.
I moved to California in the winter of 2010, to be closer to family, and was fortunate to have been part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County. It was there that I recognized a longing to return to the classroom. Once obtaining my California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, I served as the Sacramento Program Manger for Reading Partners, a national educational non-profit that recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as tutors, mentoring struggling young readers 1:1 to help them increase confidence and build literacy skills.
After fourteen years of teaching in a variety of capacities, I am now enrolled as a full-time student in Waldorf Teacher Training at Rudolf Steiner College, where I intend study more about early childhood development. I am a life-long learner and am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my love of life and learning by serving as a member of the Varsity Tutors team.
