I am a graduate of George Williams College and have taught 7th graders for several years. Finding my passion in working with students one-on-one or in small groups, I returned to graduate school where I earned a Master of Science in Education from Western Illinois University. I have been certified as a teacher and school counselor. Over my career in public education, K-12, I have taught and counseled middle school(grades 7-8)students. For the last dozen years of my full-time employment, I have worked with elementary(grades K-6)students, their families, and teachers. I love the spontaneity, openness, and sense of exploration and fun, elementary students possess. I am inspired when I can see a student's overall growth in mind, body, and spirit. I relish supporting, encouraging, and challenging my students to uncover and stretch their greatness. Additionally, as a counselor, I have assisted students with the development and strengthening of study skills, test preparation, and goal setting. My most recent tutoring experience involved working with elementary students identified under the No Child Left Behind legislation in the areas of language arts, math, geography, and study skills. I am a seasoned professional who has made a life-long commitment to K-12 public education in Illinois and California. I welcome the opportunity to create positive, mutually supportive relationships with my students and their families, that address specific and individual learning styles and needs. I am a student advocate who strives to nurture the love of life-long learning. My interests include reading fiction and self-improvement literature, seeing movies and discussing the characters within those films, listening to a wide variety of music that includes jazz, pop, classical, old school R & B, and new age, travelling, spending time at the ocean, and being in the beauty of the outdoors. Again, I am passionate about helping young people grow academically and personally so they stretch themselves to achieve their potential and meet their goals.

Q & A
What is your teaching philosophy?
As a former K-12 school counselor, I collaborate with my students to help them identify their strengths and support them in facing their weaknesses. We discuss their feelings about school, tutoring, their learning style, and school history. We move forward with a level of honesty that allows them to make mistakes, ask questions, and build a level of self-confidence that prepares them for academic and personal success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Start with simple introductions and explore feelings about, expectations for, and personal goals for the tutoring experience. Have a free-flowing discussion that builds rapport and the foundation for a mutually beneficial learning experience.
