I love teaching, and I am really excited to be a part of the Varsity Tutors team. A little bit about me:
I received my bachelor of science in bioengineering from the University of Washington in Seattle. During my undergraduate career, I conducted 2.5 years of cardiac regenerative medicine research and was able to play on my school's hockey team in my free time. After I graduated in 2012, I directly entered medical school at the University of Washington. I recently finished the second year of my MD program, and I am now under a fellowship to conduct a year of cardiac tissue engineering research at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Fortunately, I have been able to tutor quite often over the past 3.5 years. I taught basic math, geometry, and algebra at an after-school enrichment program for 6 months. I then privately tutored a two students in basic science, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and SAT math for a total of 3 years. My most recent tutoring experience has been in teaching anatomy, biochemistry, and microbiology for one year to first year medical students.
My primary subjects that I teach are math (up to and including precalculus - I have tutored in calculus before, but it has been quite a while), basic life and physical sciences, basic chemistry, biology, anatomy, biochemistry, and microbiology. In terms of subject tests, I teach SAT math, ACT math/sciences, and MCAT physical and biological sciences.
My teaching style is based on cooperation between the student and me. I strongly believe that if you enjoy learning something, then you will learn and retain it far more effectively. Thus, my main goal is to figure out the student's learning style and appeal to their interests; I want studying to seem less like "work" and more like an active, enjoyable way to learn a new subject manner.
Outside of academia, I love being as active as possible. I love playing hockey and soccer, and I am an avid waterskier and "sky-skier". I am a huge fan of most sports, but especially football, hockey, and soccer. I am also very passionate about music and art, and I love to explore new restaurants around town when I can afford to do so. Overall, I think I am a well-rounded individual with passions ranging from teaching to medicine to sports to art culture.
