I'm originally from Charlotte, North Carolina (by way of Binghamton, NY) and I've gradually made my way out west. I have earned a BS in Chemistry and an MA in Organic Chemistry. I have 20 years of teaching experience. I worked for fourteen years as a Public and Private High School Teacher. I taught Chemistry, AP Chemistry, Geometry, and Forensic Science. During the other six years, I worked as a Graduate Student Laboratory Teaching Assistant. I've also taught Physical Science at the Junior High level. I have lectured to class sizes as small as five students and as large as forty students. I have also tutored students one-on-one.
I gain personal fulfillment from helping students to gain confidence in areas that many consider to be scary. The confidence and problem-solving skills often carry over into other aspects of their lives.
My approach is to identify where a student is having difficulty and then help them to learn and practice problem-solving skills necessary to succeed. Empathy with a student’s frustration is key. I am attentive to how a student approaches the material. I ask a lot of questions to help guide them to the right answers. This helps me determine whether a student needs simple reinforcement or a review of the fundamentals.
