I am a recent graduate from the University of Richmond. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with departmental honors in History and received my Bachelor of Arts degree in History and German Studies. I wrote my honors thesis on women's involvement in German colonialism, specifically examining the colony of German Southwest Africa (modern day Namibia) from 1894-1914 and won an Outstanding Research Paper Award from the university's School of Arts & Sciences. During the spring semester of my junior year I studied abroad in Konstanz, Germany where I took all of my courses in German with both German and other international students. I was also able to extend my stay in Germany into the summer to conduct research in various libraries and archives for my thesis. While in college I was a Bonner Scholar, for which I served at Henderson Middle School in Richmond as an after-school program leader and tutor. I tutored students on all subjects at Henderson, however, I am most passionate about tutoring German, history, and writing. I worked as a Teaching Assistant for an introductory German course while at UR and also as a writing coach for First Years. When tutoring German I find that providing students with historical, social, or cultural context is often very helpful as it helps them understand why the language works the way it does and that there is a significance to the languages structure. This helps many students find an interest in German, an important part of the process of language learning in my opinion. For history, I approach tutoring similarly; however, since history is all about context, I do not simply tell it to students. Rather, I ask questions related to the "how" or "why" of that particular moment in history, such that the student arrives at the answer on his/her own. I love both history and the German language and believe that any student who wants to learn either can if they are given the opportunity. In my spare time I enjoy many outdoor activities such as climbing, hiking, camping, mountain biking, and kayaking; I also played soccer through high school and rugby in both high school and college. And, like all history buffs, I enjoy writing as well as reading both fiction and non-fiction.
