Originally from London, England, I am a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Literature. In Fall 2014 I will begin a master’s program in English Literature at the California State University of Long Beach. As a tutor, I understand writing can be challenging, and my goal is to motivate and empower a student by improving technical skills, such as grammar and organization, and by encouraging critical thought. Common Core standards demand more writing in all subjects, and mastery of foundational skills helps immensely. Over the years I’ve had had the opportunity to tutor in diverse environments, including a community college, a prison education program, and an ESL program. These varied tutoring experiences have shaped a flexible and patient approach to tutoring and an ability to recognize individual learning styles. However, above all, literature is my passion, and I especially enjoy working on comprehension and analysis with middle and high school students. It is immensely satisfying to assist a student tackling unfamiliar language and terminology. Additionally, I like planning ahead with students by honing college-ready essay skills, such as thesis development and argument. Currently, my spare time is consumed by the logistics of moving a recent high school graduate out of state and preparing for my master’s program. However, when possible I like to take advantage of the great coffee shops and music venues in my neighborhood.
