I graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM). Having been fascinated by math and science since I was a child, I worked in the field of engineering for about three years, from coal fineness testing, sampling and quantifying evidence linking coal fineness to power generation efficiency, later focusing on mechanical design and drafting. A deep desire to create businesses inspired my first purchase of rental real estate at that time.
With an inclination toward working more with people, driving creativity and growth, I began to lean towards teaching math. I pursued a master's degree in education at DePaul University. During that graduate program, shortly after the change in career, I was hired onto a team within the Chicago Public Schools system, rising from classroom tutor, to teacher coach, to Central Office administrator, performing data analysis and strategy, and project management. Again, with my desire for more business creation, I purchased another small apartment building, becoming one of my best assets yet.
Before my bachelor program, as I was studying for my associate of science degree at Moraine Valley Community College, I was tutoring peers in math and science, which will always be remembered as one of my favorite jobs. It was here that other students recognized my ability to analogize, go deeper into material and find new ways to extract understanding from the student's point of view.
Now, I run two small apartment buildings in two different states, as well as a small property management business that cares for the buildings as well as third party facilities maintenance. I have a unique view of our first-world educational system. My Grandmother was a teacher and I never understood how forward-thinking she was until I entered the modern school system as an educator. As I spent more time within classrooms, teaching and learning from students, I saw up-close how much the research-based practice is needed in our daily lives. I learned that from classrooms to boardrooms, where you have high-quality management and teaching, you will see high performance with individuals reaching their maximum potential and happiness with their ability to contribute.
