As an undergraduate, my academic interests centered on political theory and history; got my bachelor’s degree in political science from U.C. Berkeley and my master’s (in the history of political thought) from the London School of Economics. While continuing to read seriously in these areas, I have made my living as a writer, addressing a variety of audiences of audiences over various media: music journalism when Rolling Stone and I were both young, wrote soaps here and in England, done a fair amount of freelance copy editing and currently design/write online training programs for employees of large companies. I have a California secondary school credential (in history) and have tutored high-school students in Berkeley schools. I believe writing is (largely) a teachable skill (and am grateful to those who have taught me over the years); I believe most students have more ability to write than they think, but less confidence than they need. My interests include reading in “my” subjects and (mainly) English-language novels of the 18th century and forward, television and pop-culture, yoga, meditation, and my endlessly interesting 3-year-old Lab/Great Dane/Pit mix, Ollie. Oh, and music (listening): classic rock, alternative (Sleater-KJinney, St. Vincent, Regina Spektor), and the American songbook of the 1940s and '50s (Sinatra etc.).
