I am a graduate from Beloit College, in Beloit, WI. When asked why I left my warm San Jose upbringing for cold and sleet two thousand miles away, my answer was relatively simple: the best classes I had taken during high school had been small, with lots of personal interactions with the teacher, and plenty of individual attention; Beloit had that. I wanted to explore my then budding interest in scientific endeavors, while still maintaining a balanced liberal arts education; Beloit had that. I had wanted to go to a place where I could feed my appetite for every kind of knowledge, with cohorts from myriad countries and walks of life; Beloit had that. I returned to the Bay Area after graduating in 2011 with a B.S. degree in Applied Science, and enrolled myself at West Valley College. I recognized that for all the wonderful education I had already received, there were still things to learn, and in this case, re-learn. In covering materials both in the small liberal arts as well as the larger community college settings, I gained a greater appreciation for the different ways of teaching.
I have always enjoyed finding out how others explain, approach, and solve concepts and ideas, as the dialogue invariably enriches both parties' understanding. Even when teaching or explaining concepts that are new or difficult to others, having to find a way to convey that knowledge effectively is enriching for me as well. I take a great joy in understanding how the world works, whether it's chemical properties, storied local history, etymological roots, or the inner workings of another person's mind; I teach to try and impart some of that zeal for knowing into others, as the gift grows in the giving, and life is made fuller for it.
