Originally from a small town in Southern California, I am now living in San Francisco and enjoying getting to know the Bay Area. I am a recent graduate of Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City where I received my B.A. in East Asian Language and Culture. During my time in college I was the president of my all-female a cappella group and had the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Kyoto, Japan. In my free time I love to cook (I have worked in a couple well-known New York restaurants), read, sing, play piano, explore cities, eat, and travel.

While I am comfortable working with students of all ages, I prefer to tutor K-8 or high school students preparing for the SAT. Tutoring English is my personal favorite, but I greatly enjoy the linear thinking and quantitative clarity that comes with teaching Mathematics as well. For the last few years I have also been tutoring English grammar and pronunciation to adults in Japan via Skype. In tutoring there is always that fine line between teaching and telling, and I always strive to make sure that the student is truly learning and figuring things out for him or herself with just a small nudge in the right direction. Too often students become reliant on a tutor for the answers, and it is important that the student really learns how to think so that he or she can become a critically thinking, self-sufficient individual in the future. Because students are often being tutored in a subject they find more difficult than others, I have found that positive reinforcement and acknowledging improvement is an extremely effective way to coax continuous effort even when levels of frustration and boredom are at their highest. Seeing a student grow mentally and emotionally and be prideful of their accomplishments brings me the ultimate satisfaction as a tutor.
