After graduating from Reed College in Portland, Oregon with a BA in English, I moved to Mexico and then France to teach English. There, I fell in love with being abroad and with teaching. I discovered my natural ability to build relationships with my students and help them approach language in new ways.
Returning to the States, I lived in Massachusetts and San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles. In these cities, I worked with both language learners and advanced writers. I taught at a one-on-one private high school for students with alternative learning styles, and helped these students transform their approach to education. I also prepared them for SAT and ACT Writing and Reading, as well as for college and private high school applications. Currently, I run a free after school program in East LA.
I succeed daily in making essay writing, literary analysis, reading, and poetry accessible to many types of students. I break concepts into pieces that my students can eventually use and discuss knowledgeably. I view standardized test preparation as a wonderful route to learning and expanding your vocabulary. As a fiction writer, I love to tutor reading and writing. I believe every person has the ability to be a good writer, and this can open endless doors.
When I am not teaching or planning events for youth, I am riding my bike across this enormous city, eating out, doing yoga, or writing.
