I graduated from the University of South Carolina Honors College in May 2013 with degrees in Theatre and Spanish. Learning a second language is such an important and beneficial thing to do in this day and age, and I believe that everyone is capable of learning another language if they are taught in the right environment. My passion for Spanish comes from years of studying it in school, as well as a semester living abroad in Spain. I know the struggles of trying to understand and communicate in a foreign language, so I am very well-equipped to help students overcome those struggles for themselves. Many people are overwhelmed by the huge task of learning a new language; my goal is to break down large concepts into easy to follow rules and guidelines to give students the confidence to keep moving forward. Learning a language is like building a tower- every concept builds on the last to increase comprehension, and we need only work one level at a time.
I have spent lots of time with children, in elementary school classrooms, as a camp counselor, and as a babysitter for many years. It can often be difficult for children to fully grasp concepts or take the time to ask questions in a large classroom environment. I think every kid can succeed if they are given the proper tools. For many kids, that means working in a one-on-one setting where they are free from the embarrassment and pressure of their peers. That's what I hope to provide in my tutoring sessions for students grades K-8.
I also provide SAT tutoring for Critical Reading and Writing sections. The SAT can be such a daunting thing for high school students, but with a concrete understanding of the concepts required, students have nothing to be afraid of. I took the SAT three times in high school and every single time, the more I studied, the more my score increased. I want to take my experience and use it to help students get that score they want on the first try, so that the only place they have to go is up!
When a student is struggling with learning a concept, or getting the test scores they want, or reaching any academic goal, I truly believe it is not because they are incapable, but rather because something else is getting in their way. As a tutor, I want to remove those outside obstacles, and help students find the confidence and ability to reach their full potential.
