I am a graduate of UC Berkeley, where I received my B.A. in English Literature. Since graduation, I have been completing prerequisite coursework for admission into medical school for fall 2014. I have tutored at both Berkeley and Pasadena City Colleges, working with a very diverse student population both inside and outside the classroom. Professionally, my tutoring experience is primarily in English--English literature as well as college essay writing. Informally, I have also tutored in a broad range of science subjects including college level biology, chemistry, physics, genetics and physiology. While I am comfortable tutoring any of these, I am particularly strong in Biology, Chemistry and English.
My years of tutoring experience have consistently taught me that students rarely struggle with the mere 'difficulty' of a subject. Almost always, their issues really stem from the subject matter being poorly, incompletely or inconsistently explained to them, either by a book or by a teacher. I very firmly believe that any subject can be taught to, and mastered by, any student--but only with the right instruction. I always tutor with this in mind. I am very conscious to adapt my tutoring style and approach to the individual student, tailoring the lesson to their level of comfort with the subject matter and their personal style of communication. I engage my pupils on their level, reinforcing their initial knowledge base before setting to gradually and comprehensively developing their understanding of the subject matter. To complement these efforts, I always try to impart an appreciation and discipline toward education in each of my students.
Outside of tutoring, I am an avid cyclist, reader, novice pianist and urban explorer. I am also currently working on a poetry anthology.
