I recently retired from full-time university teaching and administration to be closer to my kids and grandkids in the Bay Area. As a longtime English professor and writing program administrator at two Pac-12 universities, I’ve always enjoyed working one-on-one with individual students – whether it’s solving the problems posed by specific assignments, preparing for the reading and writing portions of the SAT, or generating and revising application essays for college or graduate school. One of the first steps in my approach is to help students develop confidence in their “expertise” as language users, no matter what their previous experience has been with reading and writing tasks in English classes. Building on those strengths is key to learning how writing differs from speaking and why (and when) the conventions of grammar, usage, and spelling matter.
