I am an undergraduate at Brigham Young University, majoring in English while also minoring in Asian Studies (emphasis in Mandarin Chinese) and French. A few semesters ago, I took a couple of tutoring classes at BYU, which both required that I spend a certain amount of time tutoring. I fulfilled and exceeded this requirement by volunteering my time as a tutor for BYU's tutoring services; by putting in the extra hours, and I also earned my CRLA Tutoring Level I Certification. I tutored most of my students in Chemistry, specifically for a CHEM 105 class (general college chemistry); I was qualified to tutor this subject because of my AP Chemistry credit. However, since my time as a tutor, I have also been a teaching assistant at BYU for the past couple of semesters. As a TA, I grade plenty of papers and actually help students to improve their writing skills, so I am very confident in tutoring students in anything related to writing (it's right up my alley, too, since I'm an English major!). In addition, I have listed other subjects that I feel confident tutoring because of my knowledge of and experience with those subjects. Nevertheless, in reality, my knowledge of material is not what I will focus upon during tutoring sessions; rather, I prefer to help students gain skills that will help them better understand broader concepts and will, in turn, help them to teach themselves new material in the future. Thus, through my tutoring courses at BYU, I have learned the true role of a tutor (along with many other things about tutoring, of course): to help the tutee gain the skills to become independent from the tutor. Thus, ultimately, my tutees should feel confident enough to tackle material without my help and still expect success.
