Recent Youngtown Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Youngtown, AZ
The student and I went through a rotational volume problem from our previous session that we hadn't been able solve during our last session as well as several problems from a practice exam. She is doing much better with limits, determining maximums/minimums of graphs, solving definite integrals, and working with velocity graphs. We also went through several problems that asked for qualitative answers about certain functions and a problem taking integrals of a periodic graph. The student had a test just before spring break started and she was feeling pretty confident about it. Over spring break, we plan on trying to go through an entire practice test using the time limits and calculator restrictions to see which topics she still is unsure of and to see what areas we can improve her speed on.

First, we went over the algebra practice test and then we covered topics in geometry like volume of solids, distance between points on a solid, and quadrilaterals. Then, I asked the student to do all the undone problems from the geometry packet as well as a complete SAT practice test for next time.

We started with a fractions quiz, which the student scored a 16.5/20 on. He is showing improvement with fractions but I am going to continue to give him quizzes until he scores 19/20 and 20/20 consistently. I think continuing to practice multiplication tables will assist with his score as he understand the principles to complete operations with fractions. Then we moved on to understanding tables, graphs, and linear equations. The student has a great understanding of tables and graphs as well as the concept of dependent and independent variables. He is struggling to tie those concepts to linear equations. We will continue to work on making the connection to the linear equation. I gave him some practice problems to work on this weekend.

As before, the student was very pleasant. We covered chemistry. We went over the student's homework (gas laws), then moved on to cover topics he will cover later in the week. We also covered geometry, which actually covered factoring (usually an algebra topic). Lastly, we moved onto some additional homework that he will be assigned (i.e. test review).
