Tutoring review by Diana in Valleyford, WA
During this session reviewed the student's homework assignment. The assignment was based on using Pascal's triangle to expand binomials. So I explained it to her and walked her through an example. Then she was able complete the remaining questions on her own. Then I reviewed the concepts she had learned this week in her class. The concepts we reviewed were calculating the area of a triangle, determining the collinearity of three points and solving linear systems using matrices. We worked through several examples for these concepts and she did a great job solving these problems.

The student and I worked on his assignment for geometry. He was required to complete the chapter practice test from his text book in preparation for his test on Friday. He did very well except for a couple of mistakes. We discussed these mistakes and his overall understanding of the topic. He knows he made those mistakes from working too fast. I explained to him to slow down when he takes his test to ensure he does commit those same mistakes again.

Tutoring review by Matt in Valleyford, WA
Met the student last night as part of his spring-break tutoring. Even though he is off from school this week, his mother wants him to keep at it when he can. And since his math teacher assigned daily homework over the break, we definitely had some projects to work on. The terrain was all fairly familiar. Decimals, fractions, etc. The best news came in the middle of the session when he asked if I wanted to see his report card. And there I saw that he had just earned a B in math. This is a marked improvement from the F grade he had started our sessions with. It was hard not to be excited and feel real satisfaction over the improvement.

The student and I had a great session on Wednesday. The session's focus was preparation for her upcoming final math examination. Again, we reviewed how to work with fractions and solve for x - the student performed very well. I saw much improvement from the last few sessions we had. We then began with the first chapter in her textbook and did a few problems from each chapter to ensure the student would be comfortable working through similar problems on her exam. She did a great job. The session ended before we made it through the entire book, but I left the student with some tips on how to study for her upcoming test.

Tutoring review by Maya in Valleyford, WA
We worked on the student's Grover Cleveland presentation. I asked if it would be okay if we started afresh so he could see how he might do his notes differently. Once he started seeing how much detail we could put in the notes, he started getting a lot more excited. By the end of the session, he felt confident and ready to tackle the rest of the project.

Tutoring review by Jack in Valleyford, WA
This session was dedicated to drilled exercises of the student's choice. Since last session was spent almost exclusively on mathematics, this time the focus was primarily on passage reading comprehension and paragraph improvement. The student was very good overall at identifying which of the possible answers maintained proper grammatical form. Establishing a general set of criteria for negotiating between these potentially acceptable answers proved a useful strategy for further narrowing them down to the correct response. A basic principle for this stage in the problem-solving process concerned conciseness and clarity. Identifying the meaning of a question as it relates to its specific context became an essential part of determining the question's scope.
