Tutoring review by Alicia in Tolleson, AZ
The student and I reviewed exponent rules from our last session and he completed his homework in preparation for his quiz this week. He was able to verbalize each step in the problems as we worked through application of area, perimeter, volume, and lateral surface areas for triangles, trapezoids, rectangles, and cylinders using expressions with exponents. We reviewed the exponent rules for addition, multiplication, and division, as well as order of operations We also found missing dimensions using table data and applied the d = r x t formula to problems with exponents. He seemed to have a good understanding of the problems we reviewed and asked several questions. I suggested that he check with his teacher about a couple of problems she provided answers for during class.

The student has her exponential and logarithms test on Wednesday. She had two review assignments that she wanted to work through tonight. Solving logarithms and exponential equations, simplifying expressions, condensing and expanding logarithms are some of the concepts she had been assigned. She did great with all of these. I did not provide much assistance through those problems. The only concept she had an issue with was graphing logarithms. However, she remembered that she had to change that function into an exponential one and make an x-y table in order to graph. Otherwise, she felt very confident for her test on Wednesday.

We went over a couple of the student's homework assignments; one science sheet and two math worksheets. The student answered the questions to the science assignment. For math, we went over transforming fractions to percents and percents to fractions. On one sheet, we went over story problems. He was able to figure those out pretty easily. I quizzed him on percents and he knew how they should be written as a fraction. With more practice, he will have it down!

Tutoring review by Travis in Tolleson, AZ
The student and I began by working the 3 by 3 digit addition algorithm. I had him draw out the visual representation of the numbers as well as work out the problem column by column. He did very well when it came to regrouping on both the picture model and the algorithm. After working a few of those problems, I introduced the subtraction algorithm and borrowing. We worked on "Bigger Bottom Better Borrow." I explained the meaning of this saying and connected it to the picture method when there wasn't enough in our picture to subtract, we need to borrow. We worked the problems step by step in order to make the connections between both ways. I know this is a challenging task, so we will continue to work through these problems on future sessions. We then completed a couple multiplication and division problems, but again kept them simple and small so the he could draw out the visual representation. We then worked on money. This time we introduced dollars into the mix and how to write money. He picked up on dollars to the left of the decimal and cents to the right. His fluency when counting is improving drastically, and he is able to complete these problems with great confidence. We ended the session by working with fractions again. This time we used a greater amount of foam squares, and he was able to pick out the different colors and also determine the fraction part of the hole for each color.

I really enjoyed working with the student. We discussed changes in the new PSAT and strategies for reading comprehension. We went over several types of PSAT questions present in the reading comprehension and things to look over. Her decision making processes were very strong, and we will continue to practice these questions to strengthen her problem solving with passages that are "less straightforward." I have asked her to complete one practice reading section, review a grammar sheet, and check out vocab flashcards before our next session on Thursday. I will email her all resources reviewed and homework materials by this evening.

The student has an exam tomorrow covering congruent triangles and parallelograms. We completed the review given to her by her teacher and then focused on parallelograms, which is new material. We paid special attention to proofs. She has a good grasp of the material and should do well on the exam. I encouraged her to make sure she spends some time this evening committing the new theorems regarding parallelograms to memory.
