Recent Santa Clara Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Tim in Santa Clara, CA
The student had two tests this week to prepare for - Biology and English. Since we studied for biology fairly extensively last week, and because he felt much better about his readiness for his bio test than his English test, we reviewed English with our time. His test was on Greek heroes. We spent most of our session committing to memory who each god was, and what their symbol and animal counterpart are. By the end he had it down, but there will be much more than just this information on his test. Therefore, I told him that he will need to review his notes concerning the hero stories, skim and study his book, and review what we had studied in our time (the gods) before taking his test. I feel like he will do great on his bio test, but may struggle with English.

SAT Math.  The student completed the 3 math sections on practice test 1.  We went over all of the problems she skipped or got wrong and figured out how to solve them.  We also talked about a few general strategies for math, questions to skip, etc.  She will do 3 more math sections in practice test 2 before out next meeting on Tuesday.

I timed the student as he completed the English portion and then went over the problems he missed once he finished. I plan to send him some strategies for English to go over and will continue to encourage him to stay focused and continue to complete problems. That will help him build confidence and endurance by test time.

She is currently working with fractions, but has a pretty good understanding of what is being taught in class. We went through her previous and current homework. Once she proved she understood it, we moved on. If she didn't understand a part of it we worked it out together and tried extra problems as practice.

We began with math right away. I had the student take notes on the basics and we discussed them along the way.  We practiced numerous skills that we had gone over and he got every problem correct!  We then used the computer to practice even more algebra.  We ended our session by going over what we had discussed and decided that we will continue to work on mathematics as he feels that is the subject where he can improve the most. Great session!
