The student's class continued their study of inequalities and were assigned a worksheet due on Thursday. The worksheet consisted of variable inequality problems and the student was tasked with solving for the variable and then using a key to assign their solution to a given letter or word to fill out a sentence. She had begun the worksheet during the day at the end of her math class and was able to complete the first half. We went through the second half which contained 14 numerical, variable inequalities and a single word problem. She had no trouble at all using algebra to solve for variables in the inequalities. She has no trouble with the methods nor with the concepts behind variable inequalities and their solutions. When we arrived at the final problem, the word problem, she encountered significantly more difficulty in solving it. Like our previous work with word problems in algebraic equations, the most challenging aspect of these questions is the formulation of an equation that can be solved. Moving through word problems slowly and in small steps, extrapolating values and then documenting relationships, should help to reveal how the equation or inequality has to be written. Inequalities present a unique challenge compared to equations due to their comparative nature. Relationships between given values become more complex and require more critical thinking to decipher. After walking through this problem with her she understood the general process, but it will be much more helpful to work on more word problems in a single sitting, and it will also give her the opportunity to attempt problems without any assistance. For her next math class on Monday she will be assigned word problems dealing with inequalities from her text book and we will be able to review them in detail when we meet again this weekend.

The student and I covered the lesson on higher degree polynomials. We started from graphs of x^n and finding the end behavior with the leading coefficient test. Then, we graphed random polynomials by factoring and finding zeros first and combining that with the leading coefficient test. Lastly, we worked on zero multiplicities and local extreme. She has a fully understanding of this subject.

Tutoring review by Austin in San Carlos, CA
The student has his math test tomorrow, so we examined the main review that his teacher gave him, and looked at an older review to make sure there were no concepts that the main review failed to mention. The main question types were scaling a shape into a bigger or smaller one, using similar shapes to calculate the missing information about a side of one of the shapes, graphing lines given an equation in y = mx + b form, filling out data tables with numbers obtained from a y = mx + b equation, and using a word problem to come up with a number in the correct units. As we went through the topics, I made a small review sheet for him to look at as he prepares for his test. At the end of the session I explained the review sheet to his mother so she could help him review for his test.
