Today we started writing another small story. The student's handwriting has improved and he is having less difficulty writing lowercase letters. We continued working on his posture while writing which has also helped to improve his handwriting.

Tutoring review by Vanessa in Rockford, WA
Today we focused on many topics -- these included simplifying expressions given different inputs (x-values), order of operations, exponents (from standard form to expanded and vice versa), and multiplication and division of larger numbers. The student did well today. She was able to complete her work and do extra practice problems with me. We will continue to work on mimicking her school testing environment to make her more comfortable with that atmosphere. Overall, this was a great session!

Tutoring review by Christopher in Rockford, WA
We talked about how to write linear equations in parametric form and how to convert between parametric and slope-intercept form. Afterwards, we discussed some strategies for solving systems of equations with fractions more efficiently, and I made up some word problems that we solved together. The student is currently in the middle of a multi-day test (the first of the year). She was able to use the skills we talked about last week with confidence.

Tutoring review by Avery in Rockford, WA
During this session, the student and I focused primarily on the math portion of the test. In our previous session, the verbal section of the test is where we spent the most time. So, it was very helpful to go into the math in more detail. As discussed in our previous session, he has not yet worked with solving equations. After running into a question that dealt with solving for "x" early on in the session, I introduced this concept and how to go about solving problems with one variable. We did a great deal of practice, and I let him know that I would send over a worksheet with one-variable equations to be completed in between the time of our next session. Because many of the questions that he did not answer correctly in his initial test are related to equations, this is something that I feel we should focus in on as we meet in the upcoming weeks. After coming to a good stopping point for math, we reviewed some analogies and discussed how to eliminate certain answers on the test. We completed the session by reviewing some of the vocabulary words that are from the vocab list. In between the time that we meet, he should review at least one page of the vocabulary each day. This will help as he becomes more familiar with vocabulary in preparation for the test.

Tutoring review by Janice in Rockford, WA
This was my first session with the student. We were working on his math packet that was due for Tuesday and Wednesday. I had him explain why he used certain operations and the steps used to solve the problems. He is working with fractions, LCM, and GCF as well as problem solving. He has to make sure he checks his work and answers the question being asked. He knows the material but makes minor mistakes. I want him to check to make sure the answer makes sense and answers the question being asked.
