Tutoring review by Meredith in Rexford, NY
We continued to work on division of greater numbers with three dividends and a remainder. The student has grasped the concept and is ready to move on to the next domain. She has 10 additional practice problems to complete during the week. During the next session we will begin to work on fractions.

Today was my first session with the student. We went over basic concepts like the mean, median and mode. We also covered ideas about probability that are at the core of statistics. We went in-depth on a couple examples for histograms and boxplots, which included the computation of the five-number summary. We also discussed the empirical rule for normal curves. All in all, a good session.

Tutoring review by Sofia in Rexford, NY
Today we spent most of our time focusing on the student's essay for humanities and getting her organized for religion. Her essay was good overall, we just need to keep working on introducing quotes and really driving home both elements of the thesis. She did a nice job following the formula for her thesis. In her introduction, we talked about varying sentence length, and in her body paragraphs we worked on introducing quotes and including language that reflected both parts of her thesis (on the author's goal and how they accomplished it). We talked a bit about why it's worthwhile to really drive these points home and not to worry about being too obvious. The more obvious, the better! In her conclusion, we talked about explaining why an author's work was significant, or how precisely it had an impact. She had the beginnings of this down in her rough draft, we just teased out the ideas a bit more. For her religion class, we made sure that she had all of her materials and could access them easily. We went through the songs she needs to listen to for her assignment and I reminded her about the clip her instructor posted, that she should check out before she takes her quiz. She said that her history quiz went better this week--she got an 80% (she got a 40% last time) and we talked about how great that was! We're going to meet two more times this week, once to view Donnie Darko together, since she couldn't find a narrated version of the film, and then again to prepare for her upcoming US History assignment.

Tutoring review by Hannah in Rexford, NY
In today's session, the student completed problem set 46 for math as well as assignments for his history and Latin classes. I also made a study guide for his upcoming chemistry exam that I would like him to work on prior to our session tomorrow. I really want us to focus on this chemistry material for the entire time tomorrow and would like him to complete the study guide first so I know the areas we need to focus on the most.

The student needed help understanding genetics, so we devoted part of our session to talking about how Gregor Mendel developed the gene idea. She hadn't heard the story, so I did a talking drawing of his process. After, we worked on simplifying algebraic expressions.
