Tutoring review by Jonathan in Prospect Park, NJ
Today, the student began working on Inequalities, specifically "two step inequalities". This seemed like the first time she was being introduced to many of the concepts, including number lines and written forms of the expressions. The way we approached this, then, was to break everything down into smaller components. For example, when it said "write down five more than ten times a number", we first wrote down "ten times a number" as being "10x", and then "five more than '10x' as "10x + 5". Breaking it down into smaller components seemed to help the student see all the parts of the problem together more clearly, than trying to understand everything all at once. We were able to cover a few sections today, so I recommend that the student look over what we've done and make sure she not only understands WHAT we did, but WHY we did it that way.
