The student and I reviewed her notes, and worked on rewriting them into a more organized outline. We transferred vocabulary and concepts to flash cards. In reviewing those flash cards, we worked on finding connections between the concepts to create context for better understanding and recollection.

This was our fourth tutoring session.  I worked with the student on math.  We focused on rounding decimals and multiplying and dividing decimals.  We also quickly reviewed some basic multiplication facts.  I worked with him on multiplication and division facts.  We also read a few short chapters of his book and worked on comprehension and predictions.  With his multiplication facts we are working to help him pass his timed tests but we also want him to remember them and not just forget them after he passes his tests.

Tutoring review by Joseph in Poway, CA
The student has been reviewing his vocabulary at home with his mother, and she had marked on the list the words he has been missing most. Today as we reviewed the vocabulary, I started with those marked words, and he got all of them right. He and I also looked at some preparation material for the upcoming mathematics test; he had very little trouble with most of the math on the practice packet, answering correctly or near-correctly on all but two problems, one of which covered a concept wholly unfamiliar to him or to anyone else in his class.

The student and I worked on phonics skills today. Specifically, beginning consonant sounds and short vowel sounds. We worked on writing sentences by listening. I would say the sentence and he would hear it and write it. This is to practice his hearing of phonemes and representing them with the appropriate grapheme.
