Recent Otis Orchards Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Vanessa in Otis Orchards, WA
During our session we went over the Pythagorean Theorem and reviewed word problems from homework and classwork pages. The student has a strong understanding of that concept. Her school is doing district tests this week so she has not been to some of her classes and did not have any new math assignments. We were able to go through her science homework covering sexual and asexual reproduction. We also reviewed her language arts homework over the book "The Giver" and answered questions pertaining to an article that was assigned by her teacher. We finished her cover page for her social studies notebook and organized her binder by classes so that she can easily locate her schoolwork. She had a positive attitude during the session and shared with me her goal of becoming a doctor. We went over organization strategies to help her find things better. I reminded her to take home her math planner for the next session so that we could look ahead and see what concepts she will be studying. Great session -- she was worried we would not have much to do because she has not been to her classes due to testing but we found a lot of work that needed to be done!

Tutoring review by Michael in Otis Orchards, WA
Today we worked on the student's study guide for his upcoming exam. It was very long so we worked through a few problems in each topic area. We spent a little extra time reviewing old topics like simplifying expressions and combining like terms. We also spent extra time on topics that he had trouble with in review, such as area formulas and two step equations. I highlighted some problems for him to try on his own as he continues studying.

The student did great on her last Algebra test! It was on material we had covered: exponents. She got a 24/26, and was able to pull up her overall grade in the class from a B- to a B. They are now working on polynomials and have a test later this week. She spent part of the session finishing her homework. After she finished her homework, we practiced binomial factoring, trinomial factoring, and multiplying multiple polynomials. She did well on all three!

We reviewed for AP Calculus including complex fractions, logarithms, trigonometry and graphing functions. The student struggled with recalling the concepts he had previously learned. After a little teaching and prompting he was able to recall the concepts. He seemed receptive towards learning and excited to be in AP Calculus. We practiced a few questions in a block that he had questions about and he was left to the rest.

Today we did a review of a few sight words to get started and then spent time on silent e and "i" words, like "ice, mice, hike, and bike." The student did well reading these words and spelling them. Next we started to read a book and he was able to read all of the words I asked him to.

Tutoring review by Edgar in Otis Orchards, WA
I first tutored Student R and did correction on her test. We began with finding the rate of change of a tub being filled up with water. I helped her figure out that once we find the unit rate (which is how many gallons is filled per minute) then we would be able to solve the problem. We then moved onto two step equations involving fractions. She had a little difficulty grasping the idea of multiplying a fraction by its reciprocal when the X is attached to it. She remembers order of operations. With Student C, we worked on integers and fractions. We got down the rectangle figure when dealing with multiplying and dividing fractions. I'm very impressed with her multiplication abilities but unfortunately her adding and subtracting does need to be worked on. We learned to multiply mixed fractions and reviewed GCF and LCD so we could properly add/ subtract fractions.
